Texting takes off but has perils

Texting takes off but has perils
Paul Gilster

What's better than talking on telephones in public places? Cell phone addicts already know the answer -- sending text messages.
In June, Americans sent 75 billion text messages, an increase of more than 160 percent from the previous June. Texting is paying off royally for carriers, who have boosted the cost of sending messages without a texting plan 100 percent over the past two years.
They're now offering plans for unlimited texting running $20 per month on top of the normal phone charges.
If it seems unbelievable that mobile subscribers send and receive 357 text messages per month (according to Nielsen Mobile), the consequences make the statistic seem more ominous than trendy. The recent commuter train accident in California might have been caused by an engineer who was texting en route. A study by Britain's Royal Automotive Club found that reaction times of texting drivers are worse than those who are legally drunk.
Let's couple that with another appalling result: Nearly 50 percent of 18- to 24-year-old drivers say they text while they drive. Texting means taking hands off the wheel, using your thumbs to manipulate a tiny keypad, and trying to read text on a tiny screen. It also involves putting your brain into lockdown while you try to figure out what you want to text next.
Drivers yakking on cell phones are enough of a hazard. When will we get smart and ban hand-held phone use in moving vehicles?

United States SMS RECORD

US mobile users break SMS text messaging record!

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

Just how many SMS text messages do US wireless users go through each month, day, or hour? According to VeriSign, a veritable boatload - a technical term, to be sure.
The Mountain View, CA.-based company has announced that it ferried about 95.4 billion SMS text messages between wireless carriers in the 1H 2008. The volume of text messages set a new record for text messages sent in the first half of any year to date. Add to that the fact that VeriSign pushed through a record-breaking 648 million texts in a single day and 42 million text messages in a single one-hour window, and it becomes clear that more and more users are becoming savvy to the SMS text messaging craze.
Q2 2008 alone saw 52 billion messages zipping through the wireless airwaves, with daily averages in the period hitting 572 million messages - more than double the average daily volume of 230 million messages in Q2 2007.
What’s to account for the boost in text message usage? It’s most likely a combination of increased wireless penetration in the US, an increase in savvy consumers with SMS-friendly keyboard-toting smartphones, and perhaps the prevalence of mobile phones among the younger demographics.
In the end, we’ll likely see SMS text messages take a back seat to instant messaging and email services that aren’t subject to per-message fees or messaging limits.

EDT Colin Gibbs RCR Wireless NewsComment on this storyTriple-tapping continues to explode, according to new figures from VeriSign Inc.

The Mountain View, Calif.-based company said it delivered 95.4 billion inter-carrier text messages in the first half of 2008, establishing a new record for text messaging activity during the period. VeriSign also reported a single-day record of 648 million texts and a one-hour record of 42 million messages.
The company said it delivered more than 52 billion messages during the second quarter of 2008, up more than 20% from the previous quarter. It saw a daily average of 572 million messages, more than doubling the 230 million per day during the second quarter of 2007.
Text message usage is expected to grow in the near future as the application continues to gain mass-market traction in North America and some emerging markets. But mobile instant messaging eventually will cannibalize SMS and computer-based e-mail, according to a recent study from TNS Technology, as users eschew messaging fees in favor of all-you-can-eat data plans.

EU Caps Roaming Fees for Text Messages

EU Caps Roaming Fees for Text Messages

Tuesday, 02 September 2008
The Associated Press

BRUSSELS, Belgium.-
Are mobile phone companies taking advantage of teenagers' addiction to chatting in text messages? The top telecommunications regulator for the European Union believes so, and said Tuesday that a limit should be placed on the cost of international texts.
EU Telecoms Commissioner Viviane Reding said she wanted to see roaming fees for text messages fall by up to 70 percent. She said she will put forward rules in October to cap charges.
Europeans traveling outside their home nations send 2.5 billion text messages every year - paying 10 times more than they do at home.
"We are punishing our young students, our young travelers, and that is completely unfair," Reding said.
On average in the EU, sending a text while traveling abroad costs 29 euro cents (46 U.S. cents) per message, but that can climb to 80 euro cents ($1.27) in certain countries, such as Belgium.
Telecom regulators from the EU's 27 nations want to see that fall into a range of 11 to 15 euro cents (17 to 24 U.S. cents) for each message.
Reding's attack on text messages comes just a year after the EU capped the costs of voice calls made and received abroad. Costs for those calls have dropped by up to 60 percent since last summer.
